Backup replied by kalle @ Tue, 06 Oct 2009 06:15:50 -0000

Hi. Knox can backup to most volumes you mount and access through the Finder, but it will only use the faster incremental backup feature if the destination volume is local (a regular drive connected to your Mac) and formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS+). Backing up large vaults through slow connections is, well, slow at the moment unfortunately.

I came to the Knox website because I am looking for a encrypted backup software that could work with a distant server. I read the Q&A and saw the video. The vault aspect of it is well known to me since I am regularly using the Disk Utility. But I am still in the blue regarding the backup capabilities of Knox. Could any one enlight me, please?

Disk appears full replied by kalle @ Thu, 01 Oct 2009 07:49:58 -0000

Hi. Is the vault of the older sparse image (as opposed to sparse bundle) format? You can check this by right/ctrl-clicking the vault file and checking the extension. These kinds of disk images seem to suffer from a bug where filling it to the brim will cause such thing you describe to happen. The workaround is to perform compaction on the vault file, which will restore the ability to write to it.

I have an external disk configured as an expanding full-disk vault to backup to. When I “get info” for the open vault, it says that it is completely full. When I run OnmiDiskSweeper on it, I find that there are files taking up only 1/5 of the space. Why is this vault looking completely full and preventing me from writing more to it?

Hi. Crashes can have this effect, more often with the older sparse image format on Tiger. If Disk Utility can’t perform actions on it, it’s likely gone for good, I’m afraid.

Hi. The ideal setup would be to run the web server as the user you’re logged in as and point the web server’s root to a directory inside the vault. This way no permissions have to be fiddled with.

Unable to open vault on portable drive replied by dabaldr @ Tue, 22 Sep 2009 00:30:31 -0000

I am running Knox 1.6.3 on Tiger. Just created on new vault on an portable drive. While transferring a file into the vault the system froze and had to re-boot. Now I cannot open the vault – it gives the error message “no mountable file systems” after inputting the password. Tried using the Disk Utility to repair the vault, but that also returned an error message that the volume could not be repaired because of an error. Any suggestions on how to fix this??

Knox: Serving Apache from a Knox Vault replied by nikz @ Mon, 07 Sep 2009 00:54:20 -0000

Hi,

I’m keeping all of my web-development code in a Knox vault, and I’m trying to get Apache to serve from some directories in the vault.

If I move the folders out of the Knox vault and change the Vhost, then everything works like a charm, so I don’t think it’s my Apache config.

Whenever I access the vhost, and the files are inside the Knox vault, I get 403 – Forbidden from Apache. (Even after “chmod -R 777 .”)

If it’s not possible to do this, then that’s cool – but it would be good to know one way or the other :)

Cheers,

I used to be able to search for the actual contents of word and texts files within all my knox vault folders. But ever since I upgraded to the new version 1.6.3 on my new Macbook Pro running OS 10.5.8 the mac search engine can’t find any of the words I’m searching for. But it does find all the words if they’re not in a knox vault. Is there a knox setting I don’t know about or is this a bug? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need clarification on strategies for vault backup replied by kalle @ Sat, 15 Aug 2009 10:14:46 -0000

Hi,

– what kind of effect does a momentarily read-only flag have on applications that are accessing files on a mounted (encrypted sparse bundle) image? Is backup just delayed until all writing has been completed so the read-only flag can be set?

Telling the system to mount the vault as read-only will cause any existing read/write operations on the volume to fail and it is then up to the individual applications to handle this correctly. Personally I haven’t found this to be an issue wrt data integrity, with a slew of applications (TextMate, VoodooPad, PostgreSQL, ...) running and accessing the volume.

– shall we just make sure that images are simply unmounted for any sort of backup to happen? So an image may just skip 1 or more scheduled backups because it was open.

Yes, this would be the best way to ensure that nothing is out of wack on the other side.

Need clarification on strategies for vault backup replied by luca @ Thu, 13 Aug 2009 12:25:34 -0000

Hello,

I discovered your program recently and would like to ask a couple questions before buying it.

I’m currently trying to figure out what’s the best strategy to secure my personal data on my laptop and at the same time have a smooth backup solution. I initially thought about using multiple encrypted sparse bundle images for separately storing emails, personal documents, etc.. and letting Time Machine take care of backing up my system. As I understand it, I see one complication with that system: what does Time Machine do when the encrypted sparse bundle images are open (mounted)? What happens if an application (i.e. Mail.app or Pages) is willing to write data on the the image, when TM starts?

I stumbled on Knox and it seems it can help in managing all the images I have.

By reading your forums I discovered that: 1) Time Machine does not (or rather, shall not) backup open images, 2) Knox has an option to momentarily set as ready-only a vault it is starting to backup.

At this point I’m a little puzzled as to what is the best way to deal with images/vaults and backups. It appears to me the best way would be to unmount them, but this is not very flexible / practical (especially for images storing emails… I shall just close Mail.app from time to time). Knox seems smarter thanks to the temporary read-only flag, but I’m unsure what happens to Applications currently accessing the image.

My questions are:

– what kind of effect does a momentarily read-only flag have on applications that are accessing files on a mounted (encrypted sparse bundle) image? Is backup just delayed until all writing has been completed so the read-only flag can be set?

– shall we just make sure that images are simply unmounted for any sort of backup to happen? So an image may just skip 1 or more scheduled backups because it was open.

Hope I’ve not been too messy and that you can provide some useful insight :-)
Thanks!
Best regards.

Slow Knox Vault Menu posted by macden05 @ Mon, 13 Jul 2009 18:59:05 -0000

Recently It seems it is taking an exceptionally long time for Knox do display my vaults in the Knox menubar dropdown menu after startup.

For about 2 minutes I get the spinning beachball when I try and access the menu. There are only 7 vaults and none of them are very large.

My computer is a iMac g5 (2GHz/1.5GB SDRAM) running OS 10.4.11.

Self-Destruct replied by Slantsixx @ Wed, 01 Jul 2009 16:27:20 -0000

For those of us that need an extra layer of security, is there a way to add a feature that the vault would quickly self-destruct after a user-defined number of incorrect password attempts? Not just an auto-delete which could be recovered, but a true self-destruct so that the data is corrupt beyond repair?
